Multi-cultural Toronto is a dynamic city with a wide variety of ethnic neighbourhood villages, a vibrant waterfront, and a myriad of cultural attractions.  In 1763, when British Colonial officials built Fort York the community became the capital of the province of Upper Canada (now Ontario). In 1834, with 9,250 residents, it was incorporated as the ‘City of Toronto.' The population continued to expand: when Canada became a country in 1867, the city was home to 50,000 souls. By 1901, 208,000 people lived here. Today with well over two million people, Toronto is Canada's largest city, the heart of the nation's commercial, financial, industrial, and cultural life, and is one of the world's most liveable urban centres. This evening we have a Welcome

The best known feature of the park-the Cabot Trail, provides breathtaking views of the Gulf of St. Lawrence headlands and the curving Atlantic shores.

As we travel around the Cabot Trail keep your eyes open for wildlife, maybe an eagle gracefully soaring in the clear blue skies or if we are lucky see a moose or two ambling down the highway. Often times you will see traffic come to a complete stop as tourists view this magnificent creature usher her calves across the road. Cabot Trail

The Cabot Trail winds north from Baddeck, goes through the Acadian Village of Cheticamp
and climbs French Mountain, moving along the Gulf of St. Lawrence coast to Pleasant Bay,
then across the interior to Ingonish at the north-eastern entrance to the park. There are many places one can walk through a variety of habitats typical of this natural region of lush hardwood, boreal forests, bogs, barrens and muskeg.   Along the Gulf shoreline, the carefully monitored schools of Atlantic salmon begin their return upriver on their spawning runs. Cape Breton Highlands is one of only four national parks in the world protecting breeding habitat of this internationally threatened species.  (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Louisbourg StreetDay 19 – Fortress of Louisbourg - Enjoy a leisurely visit to the impressive Fortress of Louisbourg, the crown jewel of the Canadian Park Service, journey back in time as you stroll through this 18th century fortress. Step back in time to 1744! Experience Louisbourg, a thriving seaport and the capital of Ile Royale. The Fortress was one of the busiest harbours in North America and one of France's key centres of trade and military strength in the New World. The French came to Louisbourg in 1713, after ceding Acadia and Newfoundland to the British by the terms of the Treaty of Utrecht, which ended the War of the Spanish Succession. France's only remaining possessions in what is now Atlantic Canada were the islands of Cape Breton and Prince Edward, which were then called Isle Royale and Isle Saint-Jean. The French used these islands as a base to continue the lucrative cod fishery of the Grand Banks. In 1719 they began to construct a fortified town at Louisbourg which was only completed on the eve of the first siege in 1745.

Fortress LouisbourgFollowing a declaration of war between Britain and France. Charged with the fervour of a religious crusade, and informed that the fortress was in disrepair with its poorly supplied troops on the verge of mutiny, the New Englanders mounted an assault on Louisbourg. To the embarrassment of the New Englanders, only three years later the town was restored to the French by the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. In 1758 Louisbourg was besieged a second time. Attacking with 16,000 troops supported by 150 ships, a British army captured the fortress in seven weeks. Determined that Louisbourg would never again become a fortified French base, the British demolished the fortress walls. In 1961 the Government of Canada began a $25 million dollar project aimed at reconstructing approximately one-quarter of the original town and fortifications. Within this area the buildings, yards, gardens and streets are being recreated as they were during the 1740s, immediately preceding Louisbourg's first siege.
